Life is full of pivotal moments where we're faced with a choice: take a risk or lose a chance. These decisions can shape our futures in ways we can't always foresee, but they often lead to personal and professional growth that enriches our lives. As someone who has spent 14 years at the IAPP serving our members and the many years serving my community in South Berwick, I have come to understand the importance of these moments. Today, I want to share a personal journey that embodies this very principle.
A fond farewell to South Berwick
I have loved every minute of my service in South Berwick. The experiences and lessons I've gathered here have been invaluable, both professionally and personally. It's been an honor to serve as a Town Councilor and to work alongside such dedicated individuals who share a common goal of making our town a better place for everyone.
During my tenure, I've had the privilege of contributing to various projects, including the Downtown Revitalization Plan and the development of our Comprehensive Plan. Each step of the way, I've seen firsthand how dedicated individuals and collective efforts can lead to meaningful change.
The next chapter: Town Manager of Lancaster, NH
It is with a mix of excitement and bittersweet sentiment that I announce my resignation from my roles at the Town of South Berwick and at the IAPP. I am pleased to share that I will be continuing my path towards serving humanity in a new capacity as the Town Manager of Lancaster, New Hampshire.
This new role represents a significant step forward in my career and I've found my true north: it is making a direct difference in local communities. The decision to take this risk was not made lightly. It involved a lot of reflection and the consideration of my family on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. However, I believe that embracing this chance will allow me to apply the skills and knowledge I've gained here to a new context, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to Lancaster. It will allow me to be more focused with my efforts, not having two jobs but one. My children will gain a deeper understanding to walk in the shoes of others simply by being the "new kids".
Lessons learned
Reflecting on my journey, several key lessons stand out that most folks can relate to:
Growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone: The most significant growth often comes from taking risks and embracing the unknown. Moving to a new town and stepping into a new role is daunting, but it's also an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a broader impact.
Collaboration is powerful: The power of a united community is immense. In South Berwick, I've seen how working together towards a common goal with clear communication can transform a town. I carry this lesson with me as I step into my new role, knowing that fostering collaboration will be key to success.
Every experience is knowledge you put in the bank: Every lesson learned in my roles has prepared me for this next chapter. From managing budgets and employees, each experience has been a building block that strengthens my ability to serve effectively.
It's Okay to Embrace Change: Change is a natural part of life and career. Embracing change with a positive mindset can open doors to new opportunities and adventures that might otherwise be missed.
A heartfelt "Thank You"
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the residents of South Berwick, my committee friends, my colleagues at the IAPP, and everyone who has supported and collaborated with me over the years. As I take the initial steps on this new journey, I will take your trust and encouragement with me for the rest of my life.
Embrace your own risks
Take the risk or lose the chance. Whether it's a career change, a new project, or a personal challenge, taking the risk can lead to incredible opportunities. Don't let the fear of the unknown hold you back. Instead, step forward with confidence, knowing that every risk taken is a chance to grow, learn, and make a difference.
I am excited about the possibilities that await in Lancaster and look forward to continuing my commitment to public service.
Thank you to the IAPP and South Berwick for everything. Cheers to new beginnings and the endless possibilities that come with personal growth.
